Is 8GB RAM Enough for a Laptop in 2026?

    Updated July 2026.

8GB is still the entry-level RAM configuration on many budget laptops in 2026 — but is it actually enough? The honest answer: it depends heavily on what you do, and increasingly, the margin for comfort is shrinking.

    When 8GB Is Fine

    • Basic web browsing with a handful of tabs open
    • Email, word processing, and light spreadsheet work
    • Streaming video (Netflix, YouTube)
    • ChromeOS devices, which are generally more memory-efficient than Windows or macOS

    When 8GB Falls Short

    • Heavy multitasking — 20+ browser tabs, multiple apps open simultaneously
    • Video calls running alongside other work (Zoom/Teams are surprisingly memory-hungry)
    • Any photo or video editing, even “light” editing in apps like Lightroom
    • Running local AI tools or larger applications with in-memory datasets
    • Windows 11 itself has grown heavier over time, leaving less headroom on 8GB systems than it did a few years ago

    Our Recommendation

If you’re buying a Windows or macOS laptop today and can afford the upgrade, get 16GB — the price difference is usually modest, and since RAM is soldered and non-upgradeable on most modern thin laptops, you’re locking in that decision for the life of the device. 8GB is acceptable mainly on Chromebooks or as a true last-resort budget option — see our best Chromebooks guide or best laptops under $500 guide for well-reviewed 8GB options that still perform well within their intended use case.

    FAQ

Will 8GB RAM slow down over time?

Somewhat — as operating systems and web browsers grow more resource-hungry with updates, an 8GB laptop that feels adequate today will likely feel more cramped in 2-3 years than a 16GB model would.

Is 8GB enough for a student laptop?

For basic coursework, yes — especially on a Chromebook. If the student is in a program involving CAD, coding, or creative software, 16GB is a safer minimum. See our best laptops for college students guide.
